Acer Ultra-Portable Laptop w/ 13" Screen for $549.99

NewEgg has the Acer Timeline AS3810TZ-4078 Ultra-Portable Laptop w/ 13.3" LED Screen and 8-Hour Battery for $550 shipped. The low-voltage ultra-portable laptop is a hybrid between a netbook and a laptop, it combines the best features of both: the power of a laptop with the portability of a netbook. And at a price-tag of only $550, it's surprisingly inexpensive.

The tech specs of the laptop are listed below:

  • Intel Pentium Dual Core Low Voltage SU4100 (1.3GHz)
  • 4GB DDR3 Memory
  • 500GB 5400 RPM SATA2 Hard Drive
  • Intel GMA 4500MHD Integrated Graphics Card w/ HDMI Out
  • Gigabit LAN and 802.11 B/G/N Wireless
  • 13.3" LED-Backlit LCD Screen w/ 1366x768 Resolution
  • Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
  • 6-Cell Li Ion Battery (up to 8 Hours)
  • Weight: 3.5 lb

One thing to notice about the laptop is that, like most netbooks, it does not include an optical (CD/DVD) drive. Ultra-Portable laptops are very energy efficient and due to their low-voltage processors and LED-backlit LCD displays, they also run noticeably cooler and much longer (8 hours) than most traditional laptops. While not as powerful as most laptops that retail at this price-point, this ultra-portable's configuration should have more than enough power for the average person's computing needs.

Now wonder they're cheap. Dynex and Insignia? They're cheap generic house brands generally made by the same company as the really cheap brands, like Soyo, coby, etc.

This Acer deal is a much better price than dell is asking for the Inspirion 13z on the black friday email they sent epp members yesterday.

Everything's good except that crappy Pentium. Acer should have put in a Core SU to match the 4GB RAM.

That's not correct. Soyo and Coby are street-vendor-level products. I've had a 32" Insignia Plasma TV for a year and a half now and it works perfectly still. 90% of the parts in Insignia TVs are actually made by LG. Not so sure on Dynex but Insignia is good stuff.

Just out of curiousity, what brand is it that makes Soyo, Coby and these other brands. Because I think you must not do enough research online. I'm going to assume you own either a overpriced Sony, or a Westinghouse (that will be returned most likely in the near future because of defect). Or do you sill have a tube?
