The 5 Worst Deals of Black Friday 2011

#2 Cables for your new electronic device

One of the first things you’ll think you need when buying your new TV is an HDMI cable. You’ll go to grab one, and figure that $29.99 is a bargain price since the picture quality will be so good. However, you should avoid buying cables from retail outlets unless they’re discounted by 80-90% -- that is the typical markup. Take a normal, run-of-the-mill HDMI cable from Radio Shack – they’re advertising the regular price on their website as $27.99, the current price as $14.99, and their Black Friday price as $9.99.

While this may seem like a great deal on Black Friday, if you check a site like Monoprice.com, you’ll find that the same 6’ cable can be found for $3.50. Go for anything longer in a retail store and you’ll pay a much larger premium, too. Monoprice, on the other hand, only ups the cost $5 if you want a 10’ cable.

Our message here really is rather simple – cables seem to be hugely discounted on Black Friday, but that is because of the very high profit margin they normally carry. If you really need the cable right away, then buy it from a local store, but if you’re buying the TV or game system as a Christmas gift, avoid the retail store and go with a site like Monoprice. You’ll save a lot of money.

With that said, these tablets are not worth the slight savings you might see.
