#1 Electronics from retailers that don’t typically carry electronics
Last year, we recommended that you avoid a game system from CVS because it was made to look like a Nintendo Wii, but was definitely far from a genuine Wii console. This year, in looking through the ads, we have found many more offenders. When looking at CVS’s ad, for example, we found a bevy of electronics that you should avoid. Take the 7 inch “Wireless Touch Screen Tablet,” which doesn’t list a brand name, but likely isn’t the Velocity Cruz that we’ve recommended. There’s the 80 dollar “Portable LCD TV with built in DVD player” (that many other retailers offer for $50). Or -- and this is a big one -- a 13-inch off-brand LCD TV for $94.99 when Best Buy has a 24-inch LCD for only $74.99.
If you’re considering any sort of ‘deal’ for electronics at one of these types of retailers, you need to make sure you do your research before buying, and examine the product carefully. While it may look and seem like a Microsoft Kinect to the unsuspecting eye, your giftee can and will know the difference. Avoid these knockoff choices and go with the real thing.
